AI symposium
Symposium gives local students AI tips
About 250 area high school and community college students learned how to put artificial intelligence, or AI, to practical use at a symposium at UC Riverside on Sept. 5. The daylong event, hosted by the Inland Empire Regional K-16 Education Collaborative, explored how generative AI is reshaping education, career pathways, and the workforce. The symposium welcomed 250 participants, including 200 high school juniors and seniors and 50 college students and educators from schools and districts across San Bernardino and Riverside counties.

A sunny picnic kicks off the fall
UC Riverside celebrated the start of a new academic year with the Chancellor’s Faculty and Staff Picnic Tuesday, Sept. 9. More than 1,000 employees joined the lunchtime gathering at the HUB Plaza where they dined on beef or vegan burgers, snacks, and drinks on a sunny day. In his first picnic, Chancellor S. Jack Hu greeted and posed for photos with employees near the food service line. Staff Assembly handed out ice cream bars at its booth. A K91´«Ă˝ DJ played music on loudspeakers while other campus organizations hosted informational tables.

Oak tree art display honors Native American history
A new art display at UC Riverside’s Student Success Center pays tribute to the region’s Indigenous tribes and the trees sacred to them with a wood carving made from oak trees that once stood at the site. A celebration and unveiling for the oak tree art display, which was installed in July, will be held Sept. 23. The installation, mounted on a wall on the building’s first floor, combines several wood pieces to create a 20-foot-wide and 10-foot-long display.

UC Riverside has earned top ratings along with an overall gold award from an organization that tracks the sustainability efforts of the nation’s colleges and universities.
